A Brief History of Orthodontics
Although the attempts to correct teeth problems are much
older, the first book on this subject was not published until 1728, when Pierre
Fauchard published "The Surgeon Dentist" and dedicated one of the
chapters to teeth alignment.
The first works dedicated entirely to orthodontics appeared
in 1850. One of the fathers of orthodontics is considered Dr. Norman Kingsley -
dentist, writer, painter and sculptor. At that time, the attention was focused
on correcting facial proportions; tooth extractions with orthodontic
indications were not common, because very few people had the complete set of
teeth.
Among the first specialists in orthodontics is Dr. J.N.
Farrar too, who wrote the book "A treatise on the irregularities of the teeth
and their correction". Farrar has also developed various models of fixed dental
devices and has been the first to suggest the use of moderate forces during
long time intervals to correct teeth alignment.
In the 1890s, appeared the technique of replacing missing
teeth with artificial teeth. Starting with 1930, aesthetic treatments became
very popular in the US and, in the 1970s, orthogonal surgery was actively
developed to help remove maxillary dental abnormalities in adult patients.
The year 2000 saw the apparition of transparent dental trays
that work as braces. 2003 was the year when self-ligating braces entered the
market and, since 2005, we have universal devices for the alignment of teeth
and miofunctional therapy.
Orthodontics has come a long way since these first oral health pioneers. You can count in
highly trained Littleton orthodontist specialists to employ state of the art techniques in providing you with the best oral health and smile to last a lifetime.
