When Did People First Started Brushing Their Teeth – History of the Toothbrush

It’s hard to believe that toothbrushes have only been around for the past 80 years or so. The first modern toothbrush was invented in 1938, and while people were already brushing their teeth for a long time at that point, earlier toothbrush designs varied greatly.

Different types of toothbrush designs have been in use since 3000 BC, and while most of those were simply chew sticks that people living in ancient civilizations used to rub against their teeth for the purpose of improving dental hygiene, this rudimentary tool was nowhere near the design we know today.

The first bristle toothbrush, similar in design to the one we all know and love today, was first developed in China in 1498. While the bristles were actually made from coarse hairs taken from the back of a hog’s neck, this is said to be the first time that people actually started brushing their teeth.

The toothbrush went through many transformations until we were left with its modern form. In 1780, the first mass-produced toothbrush was developed by William Addis of Clerkenwald, in England. Also, mass production began in America as well about 100 years later. Finally, after the development of the modern toothbrush, science went one step further with the design of the first electric toothbrush in 1960.

Clearly, for a long time people have seen the value in keeping their teeth and gums healthy! Keep brushing and visit  Comfort Dental Braces of Littleton for all your dental needs and concerns.
