Keeping Your Braces Safe During Thanksgiving
One of the biggest challenges faced
by anyone wearing braces is how to decide which foods are braces-friendly and
which foods are to be avoided. Making the right decision is even more difficult
during Thanksgiving, when the dinner table is packed with delicious food that
is hard to resist. Littleton orthodontics urge you to make healthy decisions
that protect your teeth and your braces during the holidays:
-
Avoid foods that are
hard or chewy – hard ingredients and snacks, such as nuts and chips can damage
the wires and the brackets that make up the braces, while chewy delights, such
as caramelized apples, toffees and candies that are hard on the outside, but
contain chewy filling can get stuck between the teeth and the wires;
-
Choose foods that are
soft – salads made from leafy vegetables, lean meat cut into small pieces and
soft pies, such as pumpkin pies can be safely enjoyed with braces, too;
-
Pay special attention
to cleaning – brush and floss your teeth thoroughly after each meal, paying
special attention to the thin space between the teeth and always finish the
cleaning process with an antibacterial mouthwash that removes even the last
invisible particle of food residue.
